Things to Do in Southern Maryland: Gilbert Run

Sitting off Route 6 in Hughesville is one of Charles County's most well-known recreation areas, Gilbert Run Regional Park. Known for its centerpiece, the large lake encompassing the majority of the property, the area also offers boating and fishing, pavilions, grilling areas, and a large playground.

Beyond the playground and the picnic tables, my favorite attraction at Gilbert Run has to be the large, wrap-around trail that gives some of the best views from all sides of the lake. Although there may be a lot of commotion around the front of the park (especially on weekends), the trail serves as a quiet hike through some beautifully cut woods.

Overall, I would consider the trail to be a mild-to-medium difficulty. Although it has great access bridges across streams and muddy areas, it is certainly not devoid of large roots and fairly steep drops. With some sneakers or boots, the hike is scenic and relaxing, though it would not be my first choice in the area for a run, and certainly not for biking.
